Comrades of Lithuanian kings, ye trees
Of Switez, Kuszelewo, Białowieża,
Whose shadow once the crowned heads did cover
Of dread Witenes and the great Mindowe,
Giedymin too, when on Ponary’s steep
Before the huntsmen’s fire he fell asleep;
And, listening to the song of wise Lizdejko,
By Wilia’s stream and murmuring Wilejko
Enchanted, of the wolf of iron dreamed;
And wakening, by the gods’ command it seemed,
Built Wilno city like a wolf that broods
'Mid bears and boars and bison in the woods.
'Twas from that city like the wolf of Rome
Kiejstut and Olgierd and his sons did come,
Far-famed as hunters and renowned as knights
In battle with the foe and wild beast fights.
A dream foretold that Lithuania
Would need her iron and wood in peace and war.
